What is a Non-anesthetic Dental (NAD)?
Dental cleanings performed under anesthesia are considered the gold standard in veterinary dentistry. However, for some pets, a non-anesthetic dental cleaning can be an appropriate alternative. At Green Dog, we offer both anesthetic and non-anesthetic dental cleanings so we can recommend the option that best fits your pet’s individual needs.
Our non-anesthetic dental cleanings are performed while your pet is awake. Because of this, our team focuses on creating a calm, fear free and stress free experience from start to finish.
We take time to help each pet feel comfortable through gentle handling, positive interaction, and plenty of reassurance before the procedure begins.
This thoughtful approach helps ensure the experience is safe, comfortable, and as relaxing as possible for your pet.
What to Expect:
1. Veterinary Dental Exam
A comprehensive oral exam and dental charting to determine if your pet is a good candidate for a non-anesthetic cleaning. If not, our veterinarian will discuss recommended next steps.
2. Scaling and Polishing
Thorough dental scaling above and below the gumline using ultrasonic and hand instruments, followed by polishing to help slow plaque and tartar buildup.
3. Veterinary Consultation
A private consultation with our veterinarian to review findings and recommendations.
4. Dental Care Plan
Personalized guidance on at home dental care and timing for your pet’s next cleaning.
Is Your Pet a Good Candidate?
Non-anesthetic dental cleanings are best suited for pets with mild to moderate tartar buildup who are generally healthy and comfortable being handled while awake. They can also be helpful as preventative maintenance between anesthetic dental procedures.
However, not all patients are good candidates for the non-anesthetic dental cleaning. Pets with loose or broken teeth, significant tartar buildup, gum inflammation, or tooth discoloration may require a more advanced dental procedure performed under anesthesia. If this is the case, our veterinary team will discuss the best treatment options for your pet.
Why It Matters:
-
Dental disease is extremely common. About 70 to 80 percent of dogs and cats show signs of dental disease by age 3.
-
It is the most common condition seen by veterinarians. Periodontal disease is the number one diagnosed health issue in adult pets.
-
It is painful and progressive. Untreated plaque and tartar can lead to gum infection, loose teeth, and tooth loss.
-
Oral health affects the whole body. Advanced dental disease can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream and impact the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Routine dental care helps prevent pain, slow disease progression, and support your pet’s long term health and quality of life.
